The incident took place in Windham County around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 in Plainfield.
When notified by police dispatchers of a crash in front of the department officers walked outside to find a silver Honda Accord against the department's entrance sign, the department said.
The driver, Mason Heath, age 30, of Central Village, the historic district of Plainfield, was on the scene, police said.
An investigation was conducted which revealed that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Norwich Road. Based on the evidence, Heath appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed prior to losing control of the vehicle traveling off the roadway colliding with the Plainfield Police Department entrance sign and its base, police added
Damage was done to the department sign, base, and landscape on the scene.
Police said during the investigation, officers believed Heath to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. He was administered the standardized field sobriety tests which he did not perform to standard.
Heath was placed under arrest. During the booking process, he refused to perform the breath tests, police said.
He was charged with:
- Failure to maintain proper lane
- Traveling unreasonable fat
- Operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
Heath Heath was later released on a $10,000 bond.
